Arizona Highpoint - Humphrey's Peak

A small sign idicates the summit of Humphreys Peak.

Humphreys Peak is a beautiful hike. The day I hiked this mountain, the forest service had closed much of the adjacent forest because of a wild fire that they were working to contain. Fortunately, they kept Humphreys Peak open.

Tammy was having knee problems from Guadalupe Peak so she stayed at the trailhead which is next to a couple of beautiful meadows with Aspen trees. We had a couple Motorola walkie-talkies that worked wonderfully through the whole hike and allowed us to keep in touch the entire day.

The hike starts out at a parking lot at the Snowbowl ski area. The trail immediately moves into thick, dark woods. The first hour and a half is wooded. The woods begin to thin as the trail moves up the mountain. Eventually, the trail works its way up to a saddle between Humphreys and Agazzi Peaks. As the trail moves towards Humphreys Peak, there are a series (at least 2) false summits that will dissappoint you if you are not mentally prepared for them. I reached the summit as the mountain began to warm up. I did not spend long on the summit as there were lots of very aggressive flies there that made me decide to rethink my idea of lunch on the summit.

The trail is easy to lose going up and down in the summit area. Fortunately, most of the false trails converge at one point or another. The flies were very active on the way down, so going earlier would be smart. Lots of water was required in June. The summit was cool, but most of the trip was hot.

The AZ highpoint is only a little more than an hour from the Grand Canyon.
