Maryland Highpoint - Backbone Mountain
April 9, 2000
3,360 feet

The Maryland highpoint was our second of the day (after West Virginia and before Pennsylvania). It took us 2 tries to find the exact departure point, but it is marked better from the north (HP is sprayed on the guardrail). We overdressed a little but it was snowing enough to fill your footprints between going up and returning. We briefly met a couple of Maryland highpointers. The climb, while short, was actually fairly steep. The log book at the summit had notes that said that there was a nice view. It was only blowing snow for us on this day. For additional exercise we walked up and down the mountain a couple times before returning to the car (that or we convinced ourselves that we made a wrong turn when we hadn't...). Maryland should really facilitate access to their highpoint from their own state- I think it's sad that visitor's have to come in from another
state and only see Posted signs from the Maryland side. Anyway, someone will have to post a picture of how the view is under clear skies so Tammy and I can see it. On to Pennsylvania...
