| On our third attempt, Tammy and I were able to reach Mount Mitchell. Our first attempt came when the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) was closed in February. We drove around to approach Mount Mitchell from the trail below. By the time we arrived, it was too late and the trail was too deep in snow to make the very verticle hike up the mountain. Our second attempt also failed because of a BRP closure. After driving on to bag WV, MD, PA, and KY, we tried NC again. Still, another BRP closure. Are you noticing a pattern here? We stopped at the Blue Ridge Parkway offices and found that we could reach Mount Mitchell, we just had to drive all the way around and approach from the north since only certain parts of the parkway were closed. So Tammy and I did FINALLY reached Mount Mitchell as a drive-up highpoint. |
