We made our way to Sassafras Mountain at dusk. Unfortunately, one missed turn (a road with 2 names) cost us some time. We drove up the mountain in the dark with sky showing only the last light of day. It was the first time I got to use the 4WD on my Jeep because the road went from intermitently snow covered to fully snow/ice covered. The summit was unexpectedly open so |
| we were able to drive all the way up. In total darkness, the top of the mountain was quiet and kind of eery. After looking around for a while we found the USGS marker. Not the most scenic highpoint, but definitely an adventure. The next day we were denied making Mount Mitchell in NC because the Blue Ridge Parkway closed down. | |
