West Virginia Highpoint - Spruce Knob

The West Virginia highpoint certainly provided us with an interesting trip. The day before we had been denied TN and NC highpoints because of closed roads so when we saw the "road closed" sign leading to the West Virginia highpoint, we about had a cow. We drove a little further and came across another access road saying that it was closed to through traffic. This sounded more inviting, so we decided to go for it. We made our way through a couple twisting roads (thanks to Paul Zumwalt's excellent drawing) and made our way to the access road to Spruce Knob. The road closed sign there did not sufficiently block the road so we started heading up toward the summit, hoping that no rangers would turn us away. The road was thick with snow so I got to use the 4WD on my Jeep. The snow got thicker near the top and there were a number of drifts that had accumulated- we got to run through them and it caused us no problems. A number of cars were at the summit, but apparently they were abandoned as they had snow piled around them and no people were there that we could see. There was a nice tower that afforded us a generous view of the mountains. We didn't rush things, but we knew we were trying to 2 more highpoints on this day, so after Tammy made a snow angel and we took a few pictures, we heading on toward Maryland...
